Shelyn Named as One of the Most Distinguished Chinese Dual Programs in the Nation

Shelyn Elementary is one of only 19 schools across the nation and the only public school in the San Gabriel Valley region to receive the 2023 most distinguished Chinese Program award from the Chinese Language Teachers Association in the United States (CLTA-US). Shelyn’s Mandarin team lead by Shelyn’s Principal, Sarah Opatkiewicz, presented the recognition certificate and was also honored by the RUSD Board of Education.

According to Shelyn’s Mandarin Teacher On Special Assignment (TOSA) Kevin Chou, this year is the first year for CLTA-US to host the “2023 Most Distinguished Chinese Program in the United States” recognition. The purpose of the recognition and the special edition of electronic publication K-12 Chinese Language Teaching is to assist the general public to gain a better understanding about some of the extraordinary Chinese programs in the United States chosen.” “Although Shelyn’s Mandarin immersion program has only been implemented for five years, our teachers have actively implemented innovative teaching strategies and have all helped to stabilize our Mandarin program to have steady growth. The honor certainly is the greatest recognition and inspiration for our staff."
