Dear Parents,
Welcome to Shelyn Elementary School! We are truly excited to have your child attending our school and look forward to working with you and your child. I want to invite you to our Kindergarten Orientation on Thursday, August 14, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. in the MP Room.
At the orientation meeting I will be presenting an overview of the program for the 2014-2015 school year and will introduce the kindergarten teachers. As California is now instituting a Transitional Kindergarten statewide and has moved the Kinder start date back to September our Kinder program will look a little different than in previous years. You will find out about our Kinder program, some procedures and new, state mandated changes to the Kinder program, so this is a very important meeting to attend. Once classes are finalized there will be a chance to meet your child’s teacher and hear about their classroom program at Back to School Night on Thursday, September 4th.
Classes start on August 18, 2014. Shelyn has an “Extended Day” program for kindergarten, which provides approximately 60 extra minutes of instructional time. Regular kindergarten hours are 8:15 to 1:30. (First week is “short day” all week, and class will dismiss at 12:30.) The program includes reading, writing, mathematics, visual and performing arts, science, social studies and P.E. The obvious advantage of the extended day is that it provides the teacher with more time to cover the many subjects and concepts taught in kindergarten today. This will provide a better foundation for your child’s educational career.
Each child is encouraged to bring a sack lunch with a light snack to hold them over until dismissal. Food is also available through our cafeteria and I will discuss this option with you during the orientation on August 14th. If you cannot attend, please send a representative to obtain the needed information for your child’s first day of school.
Childcare will be provided during the meeting if you have young children that must accompany you.
I look forward to seeing you at this meeting,
